Perth Timber Gluts FAQ – Hardwood vs Softwood?

Classifying wood as either Hardwood or Softwood comes down to its Physical Structure and Composition . In Timber Gluts and Timber Dunnage usage we look for the Mechanical Properties of Timber,  Crushing Strength, Modulus of Elasticity and Modulus of Rupture, Timber species are given a S OR SD rating associated with each particular Specie, a S rating is used for Green Sawn Timber and SD for Kiln dried Timber.

Perth Timber Gluts FAQ – What is ISPM 15?

ISPM 15 was developed to address the global spread of timber pests by regulating the movement of timber packaging and dunnage in international trade. ISPM 15 describes measures to reduce the risk of introduction and/or spread of quarantine pests associated with solid timber packaging material (includes dunnage).

ISPM 15 can be applied to any solid wood packaging material. The following products are exempt: wood packaging made wholly of wood-based products such as plywood and veneer, reconstituted wood products (particle board, chipboard, hardboard (masonite) oriented strand board, high density fibre board, and medium density fibre board) or products created using glue, heat and pressure or a combination of these.

Perth Timber Gluts FAQ – What is Treated Timber?

Treated Timber is timber which has been coated with preservatives to increase the timber’s resistance to attack by wood fungi (rot) and wood eating insects. This chemical treatment increases the timber’s durability to an enhanced level which is suitable for the intended use. Both Treated and Untreated can be used outside as a Timber glut however the Untreated glut especially Softwood will have a limited lifespan compared with the treated option which could last as long as 40 years if treated to a high Level. Due to Hardwoods natural resistance to treatment they are not generally treated,  Pine however is widely treated and extensively used as gluts.

There is a large variety of treatments available, some treatments protect the timber against borers and/or termites; others protect the timber against insects, borers and general decay. Different coating preservatives are used for different protection requirements or Hazard Levels.

Perth Timber Gluts FAQ – 6 Hazard Treatment Levels

There are six main levels of treatment and a number of sub-levels. These are called hazard levels and relate to the hazard to which the timber is going to be exposed.Please see the table below which are based on the hazardousness of the exposure. Different Hazard Levels have different preservatives, different preservative penetration patterns and different preservative retention requirements.
